MOVE International is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

MISSION STATEMENT: MOVE International seeks to improve the overall quality of life for people with disabilities and for the people who care for them, regardless of age or cause of disability. MOVE International promotes fuller participation in home, school, work and community life to encourage the dignity and hope such participation brings to each individual.

The mission statement is founded in the belief that the ability to move is the first foundation stone in building personal dignity.

The MOVE Program originated in the 1980s in the Kern County Superintendent of Schools,  Bakersfield, California.  The MOVE Program is now used in many school districts and other facilities/organizations throughout the United States and many other nations.

Model Sites

What is a MOVE Model Site?
A MOVE Model Site is simply an example of the MOVE Program in operation. Parents, teachers, therapists, administrators or anyone else can visit a MOVE Model Site and observe the students/clients in the MOVE program, talk to staff and ask questions, and learn how to introduce the MOVE program in their own area. (Of course, the MOVE Program is in operation at many more schools and other sites throughout the United States and world.) The below list is comprised mainly of MOVE programs operating in school settings with school-aged children. However, the MOVE program is expanding into the adult population and Chesapeake Care Resources (listed below) in North East, Maryland is operating a MOVE for Adults program as well as the BARC organization (also listed below) in Bakersfield, California.

Where can I Visit a MOVE Model Site?
MOVE Model Sites are located in the following states and in New Zealand. (For MOVE Model Sites in Europe, contact move@disabilitypartnership.co.uk.) These sites are eager to host visitors. However, appointments for a visit must be made in advance with the contact person for the site. For directions and additional information about the site, please “click on” to the specific model site.
