MOVE International is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. 

MISSION STATEMENT: MOVE International seeks to improve the overall quality of life for people with disabilities and for the people who care for them, regardless of age or cause of disability. MOVE International promotes fuller participation in home, school, work and community life to encourage the dignity and hope such participation brings to each individual.

The mission statement is founded in the belief that the ability to move is the first foundation stone in building personal dignity. 

The MOVE Program originated in the 1980s in the Kern County Superintendent of Schools,  Bakersfield, California.  The MOVE Program is now used in many school districts and other facilities/organizations throughout the United States and many other nations.

curric: MOVE Curriculum

MOVE Curriculum for Children - $169.95 + 10% shipping and handling fee

The MOVE (Mobility Opportunities via Education)® Program is designed to help people with severe disabilities learn the skills needed to sit, stand and walk. By combining natural body mechanics with instruction, learning occurs while students are engaged in real life activities. Included in the MOVE Curriculum for children is a "Top-Down" Motor Milestone Test®, an explanation of physical prompts and how to systematically decrease them for more independent movement. Student goals can easily be incorporated into an IEP (Individualized Education Program) or other plan. The curriculum is spiral bound and includes section tabs to quickly locate information. The MOVE Curriculum for children is also available in Spanish.

MOVE Assessment Profile for Children - $10.00 + 10% shipping and handling fee

The MOVE® Assessment Profile for children is a workbook used in conjunction with the MOVE® Curriculum. Decisions regarding each step of the MOVE® Program are recorded in the individual's profile, making record keeping permanent and easy. The profile includes the "Top-Down" Motor Milestone Test and the Summary of Test Results, along with instructions and activity sheets. Upon completion, you have a detailed action plan for teaching critical skills. The MOVE Assessment Profile for children is also available in Spanish.

MOVE for Adults Program Manual - $199.95 + 10% shipping and handling fee

The MOVE for Adults Program Manual is a six step process designed to help adults with severe disabilities learn the skills needed to sit, stand, transition and walk. By combining natural body mechanics with instruction, learning occurs while adults are engaged in real life activities of daily living. Included in the manual is a Top-Down Motor Milestone Test® with guidance on how to conduct an assessment of sitting, standing, transitions and walking skills. There is also a Summary of Test Results which is a summary overview of an adult learner’s current use of functional mobility skills. In addition, there is instruction on physical prompts and how to systematically decrease prompts for more independent movement.

MOVE Assessment & Program Profile for Adults (MAPP) - $15.00 + 10% shipping and handling fee

The MOVE Assessment and Program Profile for Adults (MAPP) is a workbook used in conjunction with the MOVE for Adults Program Manual. A MAPP is completed for each adult learner. Decisions by the “MOVE team” regarding each of the six steps of the MOVE for Adults Program are recorded in the learner’s profile making record keeping permanent and easy. The MAPP includes the Top-Down Motor Milestone Test® and Summary of Test Results along with instructions and forms to guide “MOVE teams” through the six step process of the MOVE for Adults Program. Upon completion of this profile for the individual adult learner, there is a detailed plan for teaching critical skills.

MOVE Hygiene & Toileting Program Guidebook for Children & Adults - $279.95 + 10% shipping and handling fee

The MOVE Hygiene & Toileting Program Guidebook focuses on “continence opportunities” rather than toilet training, with a systematic step-by-step process. (Most of the population addressed with this program will not become totally independent in toileting themselves.) The guidebook also describes a method for transitions/ transfers of larger children and adults that significantly reduces and/or eliminates lifting. An instructional DVD is included with the guidebook and wall posters are also included to provide visual displays of how the toileting program works with individuals.

Children with Severe Disabilities and the MOVE Curriculum

This is a professional reference book for physical therapists and occupational therapists working with children with severe disabilities. In addition, special education teachers will also benefit from it. A major premise of the book is that the MOVE Curriculum provides a practical framework to implement many concepts from the motor control / motor learning literature for the population of children with severe disabilities.

MOVE for Children Basic Provider Training

Two-Day Cost: $2,900 plus trainers expenses for the first 25 people in attendance, $75 for each additional attendee. (See Trainings/Events for course description.) Upon successful completion of this training, attendees are certified to use the MOVE Program as MOVE Basic Providers, but are NOT certified to teach or certify others as MOVE Basic Providers.

MOVE for Adults Provider Training

Two-Day Cost: $3,900 plus trainer's expenses for the first 50 people in attendance, $50 for each additional attendee. An additional one-day follow up training is also conducted at a later time following the initial two-day training. Upon successful completion of this training, attendees are certified to use the MOVE for Adults Program as MOVE for Adults  Providers, but are NOT certified to teach or certify others as MOVE for Adults Basic Providers.

She tells how the MOVE Program impacted the life of Nicholas and the lives of his family. Her anecdotal stories are powerful and representative of other parents of children with disabilities. Despite the many challenges faced, Leonetti gives a message of hope. (29 min.)
  • How MOVE Works - A Duck Story - In a humorous, but insightful way, the philosophy and principles of the MOVE Program are told through the story of a duck. This is an excellent dvd to show how MOVE works to those not acquainted with the MOVE Program as well as to those very familiar with the MOVE Program. (10 min.)
  • Stages of Learning and the MOVE Program - There are four commonly accepted stages of learning: 1) Acquisition - learnng the skill, 2) Fluency - practicing the skill, 3) Maintenance - using the skill, and 4) Generalization - expanding the skill to other areas. This dvd discusses how the stages of learning apply to the MOVE Program. (11 min.)
  • Cameron's Story - John Wooden, UCLA Emeritus Basketball Coach talks about the impact of the MOVE Program for his great-grandson, Cameron. Beyond his very articulate words, the unspoken communication and interaction between grandfather and great-greatson is inspiring and powerful to see. Lori Adams and Cameron's mother also talk about Cameron's progress using the MOVE Program. (4 min.)      
  • Big Strides Through Small Steps - Individual examples of adults using the MOVE for Adults Program in a day program at the Bakersfield (California) Association of Retarded Citizens (BARC) are provided. Also, overall impact and dramtic changes for the adult day program at BARC because of implementation of the MOVE for Adults Program are explained. (8 min.)     
  • Parent Interview Demonstrating Steps 1 & 2 in the MOVE Program - An example of an actual interview conducted with parents in determining the skills of their child in sitting, standing, walking and transitions (Step 1) and then setting goals for their child (Step 2).
