MOVE International is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
MISSION STATEMENT: MOVE International seeks to improve the overall quality of life for people with disabilities and for the people who care for them, regardless of age or cause of disability. MOVE International promotes fuller participation in home, school, work and community life to encourage the dignity and hope such participation brings to each individual.
The mission statement is founded in the belief that the ability to move is the first foundation stone in building personal dignity.
The MOVE Program originated in the 1980s in the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, Bakersfield, California. The MOVE Program is now used in many school districts and other facilities/organizations throughout the United States and many other nations.
What is MOVE®?
MOVE (Mobility Opportunities Via Education/Experience) helps children and adults with severe disabilities acquire more abilities (and independence) to sit, stand, walk and transition.
With these increased abilities, there is: 1) better health, 2) less burden for care providers to move or lift people, 3) more dignity, and 4) new opportunities for fuller participation and inclusion in family life, school and community. Life is no longer relegated to a bean bag, floor mat, wheelchair or bed.
Is there a Book?
Yes . . . actually 2 books. One is the MOVE Curriculum for children and the other is the MOVE for Adults Program Manual.
Both books are very practical with an easy-to-use method to set goals and to measure and document improvements in sitting, standing and walking skills.
Is MOVE training available?
Yes . . . a two-day MOVE Basic Provider training can be set up by MOVE International in your local area. Contact the MOVE International office or go to the MOVE Web Site for more information.
A Basic Provider training is for anyone who works with the child or adult with motor disabilities, i.e. teacher, therapist, aide, nurse, parent/guardian, etc.
Basic Provider training teaches attendees 1) how to use the six steps of the MOVE Program, 2) how to test and assess students/clients and then design an individualized MOVE program, 3) how to use equipment and common furniture as instructional tools.
Can I Become a Certified MOVE International Trainer®?
MOVE International trains primarily special education teachers, adapted physical education teachers, physical and occupational therapists, adult programming professionals to become certified as MOVE International Trainers (MITs) authorized to teach the MOVE Basic Provider course or MOVE for Adults Provider course.
Can I See MOVE in Action?
MOVE Model Sites offer the opportunity to see, first hand, the MOVE Program in operation. Visitors can observe how MOVE “works” with children and adults and ask the staff lots of questions!
What’s “New” in MOVE?
The MOVE Hygiene and Toileting Program Guidebook and accompanying resources (wall posters and an instructional DVD) are now available. The program focuses on “continence opportunities” rather than toilet training with a systematic step-by-step process. (Most of the population addressed with this program will not become totally independent in toileting themselves.) The guidebook also describes a method for transitions/transfers of larger children and adults that significantly reduces and/or eliminates lifting.
