MOVE International is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
MISSION STATEMENT: MOVE International seeks to improve the overall quality of life for people with disabilities and for the people who care for them, regardless of age or cause of disability. MOVE International promotes fuller participation in home, school, work and community life to encourage the dignity and hope such participation brings to each individual.
The mission statement is founded in the belief that the ability to move is the first foundation stone in building personal dignity.
The MOVE Program originated in the 1980s in the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, Bakersfield, California. The MOVE Program is now used in many school districts and other facilities/organizations throughout the United States and many other nations.

Description of Site:
- The James E. Duckworth School is part of Prince George’s County Public Schools. It serves students with multiple disabilities ranging in age from 5 to 21. In addition to the MOVE classes, Duckworth School also offers specialized classes for students with autism. Duckworth School is located outside of Washington, D.C. The educational program is individualized and varies from self-help skill development to vocational training and job placement. Therapies are delivered using a teaming model of collegial collaboration.

- MOVE classes are generally comprised of six to seven students with a teacher and an assistant.
Other notes of interest:
- One of the first schools in the United States to participate in the Special Olympics Motor Activities Training Program. Duckworth’s Special Olympics Challenge Day has been featured in training films produced by Special Olympics International Adaptive Playground and Mobility Park is finished. It is located on school’s premises. Worth a visit just to see the park! Over 200 students from nearby private and public schools participate in the school’s mentoring programs. The school has a therapeutic pet program through the nonprofit volunteer organization “Pets on Wheels.” There is a therapy tank on the premises of the school.
Directions to Duckworth School:
- Take the Capital Beltway which is 495 towards Silver Spring Maryland. Take Exit I-95 towards Baltimore and take the exit marked Rt 212 towards Calverton. Go through the first traffic light (Beltsville Ave.) and make the next left onto Evans Trail - the school is at the end of the block.
